LATCH ONTO LITERACY: Reading Focus

Structured Literacy Program

Latch Onto Literacy is a structured literacy program. It begins with a diagnostic assessment, which will assess your child’s strengths and weaknesses based on Scarborough’s Reading Rope. Your child’s individualized program will then be developed based on results and in consultation with the child’s guardian or other relevant stakeholders. At Latch, we utilize the Orton-Gillingham approach: a multi-sensory, diagnostic, systematic, sequential, explicit, flexible, and language-based approach.

With our early readers, we utilize a Speech to Print approach with a high emphasis on phonological awareness (hearing, rhyming, blending, and segmenting spoken sounds) and then we will transition to phonics, and letter recognition. You can opt to include writing instruction at this point.

We use decodable texts so our learners experience success as a reader at every step of their reading journey.

The primary function of reading is comprehending. That is why we also include the skills covered in Scarborough's Reading Comprehension Strand, like vocabulary. You can read more about what reading comprehension looks like in our blogs.

LATCH ONTO LITERACY: Writing Focus

Structured Literacy Program

Latch Onto Writing begins with a diagnostic assessment and an independent writing sample, which will assess your child’s strengths and weaknesses. In order to improve your child's ability to spell words (we call this encoding words, we target phonological awareness (specifically teaching students to break apart words into their individual sounds).

Letter reversals, letter formation, spelling rules, grammar concepts and morphology (prefixes and suffixes) will be taught based on your child’s specific needs and where they are on their writing journey. Students will progress from word level writing, to sentence writing (sentence types, compound and complex sentences) to paragraph to eventually essay writing. We will explore writing for a variety of purposes and use mentor texts to help your child understand what makes a successful writer.

LATCH ONTO MATHEMATICS

Primary Remedial Numeracy Tutoring

Latch Onto Numeracy is a mathematics program that primarily focuses on Number Sense and Numeration. It begins with a diagnostic assessment which will assess your child’s strengths and weaknesses based on the Ontario Mathematics Curriculum’s Number Sense and Numeration Strand.

This program is a great fit for students on a Modified IEP program or a student who has large gaps in mathematical understanding.  This program will emphasis visual representation and comprehension of the basic mathematical principles (counting, adding, subtracting, multiplication, and division). As students advance through this program students will apply their understanding to fractions, decimal numbers and percents).

SUMMER LEARNING PACKAGES & HOME LEARNING PACKAGES

Providing the resources you need for your child's learning success

After conducting a diagnostic assessment, your child will have an 8-week at-home learning package prepared. The program will be 100% curated and customized based on your child's specific learning needs. Once your child has progressed through the content, a secondary assessment will be conducted and new learning goals will be set for the subsequent learning period. This is a great option for parents who want to help their child but do not know where to start.
