Bossy R, R-Controlled Vowel

Once students have mastered their short vowel syllables, it may be a good time to start exploring the three sounds that the Bossy R produces.

/er/ /ar/ /or/

Each has a unique sound and spelling. The sound /er/ is also special because it has three spellings: 'er', 'ir', and 'ur'.

Here are one or two phoneme words for each spelling. These are great words to start with when introducing the sound.
